The Football Attic Confessional

One of the joys of writing this blog is going through all the things I have collected over the years.

The Football Attic Confessional - Now Open
One of the not so joyous aspects is facing the fact that there are some things I used to own which I now don't...for I have sinned.

We all reach a point in life where we look over our childhood ephemera and in a moment of insanity, convince ourselves that the journey into adulthood can only be completed by turning our back on our youthful pursuits.  This my friends, was a lie!

The burden of guilt weighs heavy on me as I know it must do you for your own misdemeanours. To this end, The Football Attic Confessional is now open, ready to absolve you of your previous mistakes.

To make you all feel at home, I hereby confess to the following crime:

Throwing away every single copy* of Shoot! magazine from June 1986 to somewhere around 1991!

And let's not forget that at the same time I also disposed of every single copy* of Match from somewhere in 1987 to around 1991.

And now my fellow sinners, it's over to you. Share here your idiocy and let the world know all you have cast aside in the name of 'growing up'

* OK so I kept some special editions, World Cup issues etc...

  1. Not so much my confessional, but when my wife and I moved house a few years ago she threw all of my Watford memorabilia in a skip.

This included scrap books containing every single match and train ticket plus newspaper clippings from the 82/83 season when we finished 2nd in the 1st division, pristine newspapers and an immaculate programme from the 83/84 cup final as well as about 15 different scarves and hats AND my programme from our first ever European tie away at Kaiserslautern which had been signed by Graham Taylor. There was much, much more.

I only recently discovered this and whilst she claims it was a mistake, I am not convinced. As a consequence we remain barely on speaking terms.

    1. The Football Attic Confessional is a place of love and forgiveness. There is a line, however and that has clearly crossed it. We feel your pain, brother and can only offer the following words as solace: "Do we not like that!"

    2. Ouch. That is all I can say Dougie. Just 'ouch'.

  2. In a frantic attempt to finish my design homework I stupidly cut up my first ever Leicester Shirt (home 1993/94 season) to use as material! My mum was in tears with me! I regret it do this day!

    1. Matt, I bet you still hear the staccato snipping of the scissors in those lonely moments in the night don't you? Wake up screaming after yet another dream filled with cascading blue shapes, soundtracked by a mother's sorrow.

It is a heavy cross you carry brother. Say three 'Hail Foxes' and buy the latest kit. Peace be with you.

  3. I threw away numerous sticker albums, including the legendary Mexico '86 Panini album. Somewhere, in a landfill site in southern England, a squad of Hungarians with thick facial hair wail in anguish whilst Ray Wilkins and Terry Fenwick look on dispassionately. Wail on, brave Hungarians, wail on.

    1. We feel your pain...A whole page of South Korea's finest are weeping from their twin stickers. If it's any consolation, I still have that album...completed. Sorry, that probably doesn't help does it?

  4. Mexico '86 Panini album - not quite complete but pretty close - got binned in a house move in 1988. As did a diary in which I had noted down all the football games, with scorers and attendances detailed, that I had attended since my first one in September 1985.

I also, in a fit of childish rage that I can't to this day explain, ripped up a signed photo of Clive Allen.

  5. Norwich City goalie Kevin Keelan's cup final tracksuit was last seen hanging up in the understairs cupboard of my childhood and teenage home but no one can say what happened to it...
