Last Chance To Enter The Last Ever League of Blogs

Last chance? Last ever? That sounds like an awful lot of finality... and it is...

There's just over three weeks left to get your entries in for the League of Blogs 2014, but not only that - it's your last chance to ever be in the League of Blogs as after this one, there won't be another.

The League of Blogs started out as a bit of fun and has always been just that and after three good years, we've decided to retire the feature once this one has finished.

We plan to replace it with something completely new next year which should be just as collaborative, but that's in the future... For now, it's all about the LoB!

So don't miss out on your last ever chance to be part of the nation's favourite* league... head on over to the instructions page and get scribbling!

League of Blogs 2014 Deadline - Fri 10th October

All good things must come to an end...as does everything else...

Several people have asked if they're too late to join the League of Blogs and the answer right now is "NO!"

If you're asking on the 11th October, however, the answer will be "YES, WHY WERE YOU SO LAZY????"

What I'm getting at is we've now set a deadline for the League of Blogs 2014 entries and that deadline is:

FRIDAY 10th OCTOBER at midnight!
(23:59:59 for those who wish to be pedantic)

That means you've got at least another five weeks, so there's no excuse to not join up... NO EXCUSE!!!!

For details on what I'm banging on about, see here and for the excellent entries so far, go to the League of Blogs Gallery

League of Blogs 2014

Yes folks it's League of Blogs time again!

What's 'League of Blogs' I hear some of you ask? Well, you can have a look at the entire history of the project here or take a look back at last year's and 2012's to get a quick overview, but in short it all started with a love of designing kits and a desire to share that with other bloggers.

Once again, we've not rested on our laurels and have striven to come up with something different for 2014.

As such, the theme for this year's League of Blogs is the "Turn of the Century" (the 19th/20th Century, that is, not the year 2000!). Now, that doesn't mean your designs have to reflect the style of that era (though the little Subbuteo man does have a rather 1900's look about him this year), but what it does mean is instead of a wallchart or sticker book, League of Blogs 2014 will be presented as old-timey cigarette cards. Genius!

As with last year, we'll be allowing badges as well as kits, though again, just a Home and Away kit... they didn't have 3rd kits in 1900 so we're not having them now ;-)

There's also a great prize this year! Whoever we choose as having our favourite kit design will win a whole Subbuteo team hand-painted in their winning design, courtesy of the awesome Adam of Fantasy Flicker. (Last year's winner & several other LoB entries can be seen here)

So here's what you need to do:

  • Create a 'club badge' for your blog or podcast. You may have a logo already, but if you want to create a new one anyway, that's fine.
  • Create a kit. You can create an 'away' one as well if you wish... we've made room for one. No '3rds' this time though :)
  • Create a tagline for your blog. This should be a single sentence explaining what your blog or pod is or what it aims to achieve.
For the kits:

Choose a template to download by clicking on the JPG or GIF images below. When the full-size version opens up on your screen, save it to your computer.

.GIF template

.JPG template

Get colouring! You can design your strip digitally with a graphics package like Adobe Photoshop or you could print the template out, colour it in with your felt-tip pens and scan the finished article. Either way, you should have a .JPG or .GIF file at the end of the process for each strip you're designing.

Send your .JPGs or .GIFs to admin [at] thefootballattic [dot] com along with your website's name and URL.

Oh and if you're not much of a designer or you don't own any felt-tip pens, why not tell us what you'd like your kit to look like? Email us at the address shown above with as much detail as possible and we'll try to turn your ideas into reality!

For the badge:

Freestyle is the name of the game here! :) You can create a traditional coat of arms/shield-based badge or you can create a modern-style logo. Of course if you already have a logo for your website or podcast, you can submit that as your 'club badge.' If you need any help creating anything, just give us a shout and we'll see what we can do.

Once you've done that, we'll present them in the following style in the League of Blogs Gallery.

Badge
Home
Away
Right... that's our efforts... now over to you!

Any questions, give us a shout in the comments below, via Twitter or on Facebook.

P.S. If you've entered the League of Blogs previously, you can use your old badge / kits if you wish... just let us know.

League of Blogs Top 3s + Sticker Update

The League of Blogs Sticker Album is complete!!!

Having spent all weekend putting it together, it's finally finished and is now uploading to the photo site to be ordered :)

As with last year, once all the entries were in, we chose our favourite three designs. This year we have split this into Badges and Kits...

But before we present those, a side note regarding the album, a word about stickers...

League of Blogs 2013 - Roundup + Sticker Book News!

Well it's over for another year! The League of Blogs 2013 has officially come to a close and we'd just like to say what a huge pleasure it was running this again and a massive thank you to all who joined in!

This year we've had a total of 51 blogs sign up, meaning a total of 99 individual kit designs (and of course 51 badge designs) - a gargantuan effort of which you should all be proud!

Check out the good work in the gallery.

But of course, the League of Blogs doesn't end here...not while there's merch we can flog off the back of it ;-)

As with last year, we'll be creating a Sticker Book (last year's shown here), which is a loose term as the 'stickers' are actually pre-printed in the book - we considered doing one where you get the stickers as actual stickers, but the cost becomes prohibitive...unless you want to spend about £30 on it, but I know none of you are that insane ;-)

League of Blogs 2013 Update + Prize + Sticker Books

There's only days left to book your place in the League of Blogs 2013!

This year's entries have so far been outstanding and the response has been great, with some familiar faces from 2012 alongside a whole host of new entries.

Don't forget there's also a fantastic prize on offer for the design we choose as our favourite. Worcester Subbuteo (@WRP7) have kindly offered to create the winning entry in a hand painted Subbuteo figure!

The League of Blogs 2013 Deadline!

As you may well know, we're running the League of Blogs project again. Last year, we never really set a deadline as we had no idea how popular it was going to be. We eventually decided to set a limit to the number of places on the wallchart (so I didn't have to redraw it for the 50th time ;-) ).

This year however, as there is no wallchart and people keep asking if they've missed it, it would make sense to actually create a deadline so you know how much time you have to get your submissions in. As this is no small project, the deadline will be quite a long one so don't worry :)

We've therefore decided to set the closing date the same as the end of the football season (which we're deciding is when the Champions League European Cup finishes).

So...you have until Saturday 25th May to get your League of Blogs entry in.

Don't forget, if you want any help with creating your badge or kits, just ask...we're more than happy to help :)

The League Of Blogs 2013 Is Here!

League of Blogs, League of Blogs, riding through the glen!

Loathed by the bored, loved by the awesome!
League of Blogs, League of Blogs, League of Blogs!

Aaaaaand relax!

Yes all, it's that time again! It's League of Blogs 2013! Wooooooooooh!!!!

For those of you who were involved last time, the League of Blogs will need no introduction. For those who weren't, this little lot here should give you some background.

In short, what started as an attempt to create a Subbuteo-style wallchart for bloggers soon developed into a much larger project... and now it's back!

League of Blogs Sticker Album - Now Available

At 6pm today, I finally got my hands on the League of Blogs Sticker Album...and even if I do say so myself, it's pretty damn sweet! :)

Measuring 21cm x 28cm, it's roughly the size of an A4 softback book and features all 92 kits from the League of Blogs Wallchart, all served up in a Panini style.

There's a short history of the League of Blogs, the wallchart and the sticker album along with The Football Attic's 3 favourite designs.

And now you too can own one!

These will be available for £15 inc P&P (unless you live outside the UK, in which case we'll work out a price and let you know before you commit) and will include your very own design(s) in sticker form as an added extra.  NB The stickers images in the book are larger than the actual stickers so you can see them better.  If there's enough call for a 'blank' version of the book into which you could stick the stickers, we'll consider doing one.  The stickers would be extra...paper doesn't grow on...oh right...

So...to get your hands on one of these beauties, drop us an email at admin [at] thefootballattic [dot] com and we'll let you know how to send payment etc.

Addendum:  Just thought I better add that though we've called this a sticker album, the 'stickers' in there are printed directly into the book...

UPDATE - There are now 2 'blank' sticker albums available. These come with a full set of 95 stickers and are available for £25 each.

The pages will look like this...

So to summarise:

Standard album (with pre-printed pictures) - £15
Blank album + 95 Stickers - £25

League of Blogs Sticker Album

Calling all those who participated in the League of Blogs Wallchart!!!

We're in the process of putting together a Panini style League of Blogs Sticker Album...you may have seen some sneak preview shots on twitter.  Well here's one again...

As you can see, the general layout is your League of Blogs entry in a Panini style, complete with a tagline for your blog.  It'll be approximately a 30 page softcover album

At present, I'm getting these taglines from your blogs and in the absence of anything obvious, trying to put something that encompasses it.  However, the League of Blogs was created by you so if there's anything specific you want, just let us know...leave a comment here or get in touch with us via twitter.

Am nearing completion of the album so will need your entries pretty quickly.

They will probably be around £15 for anyone who wants to buy one...so if you do, let me know asap so I have an idea of how many to order.

I'm also considering creating a blank sticker book version (the one being done at the moment has the 'stickers' pre-printed in the book) so you can get a set of stickers and complete it yourselves...but then that would be more expensive (as you'd have to buy the stickers as well), but also much more fun ;-)

So also shout if you'd like a blank version...

Posters are still in the pipeline too...

The League of Blogs - Video gallery

You've probably been hearing a lot about The League of Blogs from us lately (and if it's too much, we apologise!) but we really are jolly pleased with the way everything panned out and the way all you wonderful bloggers came together to form such an impressive array of kit designs.

Up to now, your kits have appeared on our wallchart as a JPEG image (which you can view here), but due to technical limitations we haven't been able to show off the fine detail of all your designs to the full. Now, fortunately, we can!

To showcase all your hard work, we thought we'd put together a video montage showing nice, big, clear images of all 92 kits featured, and here it is!

Take a look and see if you can spot your own designs (if you submitted one) and do leave us a comment to tell us which are your favourites (apart from your own, that is!)

Once again, we thank you all for your participation in The League of Blogs. It's been a fun project and one we were glad to share with all of you.

The League of Blogs Wallchart is complete!

So it’s finally complete... the League of Blogs Wallchart has had its final (final) FINAL space filled, so let’s all take a moment to reflect on what has been a rather extraordinary journey...

The Completed League of Blogs Wallchart
 The Journey:

This excellent post by Chris got me thinking about my own years as an amateur kit designer and I suggested we design a kit for our blog. Chris agreed and I set about creating what now occupies spaces 1 and 2 on the wallchart. Happy with our newly acquired couture, Chris had a brainwave... we couldn’t be the only ones out there who loved kit design and there’s rather a lot of football bloggers out there... and what do most football bloggers also love?  Subbuteo!

Chris put together the Subbuteo kit template and the first version of the wallchart with space for what we believed to be a rather optimistic 20 kits, and we were off.

The original style wallchart

The brilliant @AndrewCHarding (andrewcharding) was the first blog to sign up with his design neatly representing his polka dot-based football artwork.

He was soon joined by @NelsonsColumn (nelsonscolumn.org) and serial LoB retweeter, @AlGordonCAFC (algordoncafc.blogspot.com) and from there it began to grow steadily.

Very soon, it became clear we were going to hit that golden 20 mark, so the wallchart was extended to 25 spots (and reformatted to a Tescophoto poster friendly 16x20 ratio).

Within a week it was obvious this too was not going to be enough and the halved format of the wallchart brought with it a set of limitations we’d never thought feasible. To that end, I took the decision to redraw the whole thing, taking inspiration from this particular Subbuteo wallchart and going for a portrait style poster.

And so the new format was born...

Ooooh portraity!

As the wallchart was now gathering popularity, it was more than doubled to hold 60 kits!  The excitement was tempered with a sense of tempting fate. Could we really fill another 35 spaces?  Well we all know the answer to that...

It was then we entered what I like to call the' rapid response insomnia phase' of the wallchart’s life span. This was the period where I’d become the default updater of the chart and was generally adding new kits every day - usually within the hour. I was also spending far too many late nights working on it, especially when knocking up a design for those without the necessary tools for the job. To say it was a labour of love is a huge understatement, and despite a slight sense of dread each time it became obvious I’d have to extend it again, how could I not be ecstatic to be in that situation?  I think the latest I worked one night was about 3.30am, but I was happy in my work.

Seventy spaces were filled, then 80... then crunch time. Interest was slowing down and it had to come to an end at some point...especially as I’d now added “2012” to the chart... Yes we’re doing it all again next year folks (he said, before slowly backing away from the baying mob).

Llandudnojetset H
And so the final figure of 92 was decided upon, nicely tallying with the number of Football League clubs and also one that fitted format of the chart without cramming them all in.

On the 20th May 2012, that 92nd spot was requested by @Llandudnojetset and the Football Attic League of Blogs Wallchart was complete... alas, due to there being only one slot left, we couldn’t feature both of their kits, so they asked for the away to go on the chart, and we therefore present the home kit here... a fine set of outfits!

Conclusions

I can honestly say this has been one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. To have been a part of something that united a total of 63 different blogs was just astounding and so much bigger than we ever imagined!  But of course, at the risk of sounding like a cliche, this genuinely would have been nothing without all of you who contributed so we'd both like to say a huge thanks to all who were involved and an extra special thanks to all those who retweeted / spread the word and helped this become what it has.

Merch

Early on in this project, the idea of creating a real-world, physical copy of the wallchart was considered, and it’s still being considered and something we very much want to do. We’ll look into how this can be done and the costs involved and anything we do will be at cost.

Also along the way, in a rush of Panini love, I created sticker versions of the first batch of kits. I then bought some proper sticker paper and made them for real, and even though I say so myself, they look bloody awesome!

So so beautiful...

These will be a lot easier to produce as we can do them ourselves... just need some time to create the actual artwork for them all.

In order to work out how to pursue the above, anyone who’s interested in purchasing either, please let us know a.s.a.p. as the more interest we get, the cheaper it’ll be.

And with that, I shall go back to writing stuff about old FIFA films and other nostalgia...

Coming soon...

The League of Blogs

Left-click for preview, then select 'Save as...'
to save full-size version

As mentioned yesterday here at The Football Attic, we're proud to announce a new feature to promote peace and harmony amongst the football blogging community - The League of Blogs.

In essence, we thought it would be a cracking idea to create an e-wallchart (tipping our hat specifically in the direction of those previously sold by Subbuteo) featuring team strips created specifically to represent football blogsites.

The Football Attic's Rich J got the ball rolling by delving into the realms of fantasy to create a fictional home and away shirt for us, and now we invite you to do the same for your own football blog.

All you need to do is download our template, design a kit or kits that graphically represents your football blog perfectly, and send it back to us. We'll put your designs on our e-wallchart (see above) and forever more your blog will be immortalised shoulder-to-shoulder with your peers in the blogging community.

Step 1

Choose a template to download by clicking on the JPG or GIF images below. When the full-size version opens up on your screen, save it to your computer.

If you'd like a template in Adobe Illustrator (.AI) format, drop us a line to admin [at] thefootballattic [dot] com and we'll send one out to you.

.GIF template
.JPG template

Step 2

Get colouring! You can design your strip digitally with a graphics package like Adobe Photoshop or you could print the template out, colour it in with your felt-tip pens and scan the finished article. Either way, you should have a .JPG or .GIF file at the end of the process for each strip you're designing.

Step 3

Send your .JPGs or .GIFs to admin [at] thefootballattic [dot] com along with your website's name and URL. Once we've got your design(s), we'll add it/them to our e-wallchart shown at the top of the page and that's that. Job done!

Oh and if you're not much of a designer or you don't own any felt-tip pens, why not tell us what you'd like your kit to look like? Email us at the address shown above with as much detail as possible and we'll try to turn your ideas into reality!

Thanks for taking part, and if you enjoyed designing your kit, why not tell your friends to take part too!

Football Attic FC & The League of Blogs Wallchart

Football Attic FC?  Have Chris and Rich decided to unhang their boots and get back out on the field?  Of course not!

Following on from Chris' excellent article about his days as a teenage kit designer, we decided we ought to have an official Football Attic FC strip. To that end, I got out my crayons (OK, a graphics package) and put together the home shirt.

FAFC 'Home'

Obviously, there may come a time that FAFC will be drawn against another team in... er... brown... maybe St Pauli? This would of course necessitate a change strip. We at the Football Attic are firm believers in using reverse colours for the away kit and our first choice was for a straight reversal of the home design, but, ever the perfectionists, it just seemed a bit too simple. And so, the away kit you see here was born.

FAFC 'Away'

That's all very stylish and suave I hear you say, but what is this League of Blogs Wallchart thing you also mentioned?

Well, it's a natural train of thought that leaves Football Attic Central and journeys across the blogosphere stopping at other football blogs to see what their kits would be like. Given the Football Attic thought train never stays on a straight path for very long, it was only natural to arrive at the decision to create a Football Blog Kit Wallchart.

Here's the deal... We'll shortly be putting up a Subbuteo-style template. Download it, design your blog's kit, send it back to us and we'll compile them all into an awesome wallchart for you to cut out and keep.

Watch this space!
